What is Ghosting?

Ghosting and why it hurts:

Ghosting is the action of ending a relationship by ignoring someone and refusing to communicate with them, without any explanation as to why. Ghosting is a very relevant and common issue in today’s society that can be very painful or hurtful. Imagine this, you are starting to date somebody new, you really enjoy their company, have really good conversations, you might even hang out a few times. You start to really like this person, and suddenly, you never hear from them again. This leaves the person thinking, “What did I do wrong?” or “Why did he leave me?” and can leave them without the closure that they might need. This type of rejection has become very common with technology because you can just block somebody out of your life and never talk again. An article from PSYCOM, suggests what to do if you get ghosted. This includes focusing on your mental health suggests that you try to move on as quickly as possible from the relationship.

How is technology affecting relationships?

Technology has had a significant affect on relationships in today’s society. According to a huffiest article, social media can accelerate relationships. Technology can offer communication between people which can enhance their relationship and even start ones that otherwise wouldn’t have been started. However, technology can actually delay in real life meet ups. This can have a negative affect because it is so easy to talk online but people get scared to meet up in person. Without technology, people would need to meet up in order to have any communication. I see this to be very relevant. It has become very common to talk to many people online, but refuse to meet them in person. In fact, it is actually a trend to lead people on and then ignore them when they try to hangout.

Netflix and Chill?

What does it really mean?

To the younger generation, Netflix and Chill? is code for “come over and have sex.” According to https://www.popsugartech.com/What-Does-Netflix-Chill-Mean-38278780, this is slang term or phrase that means hooking up.

Why is this a problem?

This is a problem due to mostly younger generations being filled in on the phrase. My mother has been saying to my brother that she wants to Netflix and chill with him because she had heard the saying and thought it meant to watch movies and hangout. She was not aware of what she was actually saying and why we did not want her saying the phrase. Eventually we filled her in and she stopped saying it.

U up?

According to the Buzzfeed video article found on Snapchat, “U up?” means do you want to have sex? “U up?” is a text message that is usually sent at late hours of the night and usually imply, if you are up, that you want to hangout and engage in sexual activity. This is also known as a booty called. It infers that you would like to meet up with each other. More information can be found at https://www.buzzfeed.com/elivazquez/what-does-the-u-up-text-mean

Here is a meme of a joking U Up? text. The caption is suggesting that the person does not even get those texts anymore.

Settling Down or Settling?

In today’s society marriage is becoming a relevant issue due to people being afraid to either settle down, or settle in general. According to https://relationshipsreality.com/settling-down-vs-settling/, settling down is when you find something that makes you happy. However, settling is when a person believes they can no longer find what they are looking for. These two are important when discussing marriage because settling down can lead to more successful happier marriages, whereas settling can lead to dissatisfaction. This can be due to “The Upgrade Problem,” which occurs to people who believe that they are settling and would be able to find better somewhere out there in the world.

Cloutlighting: Funny Pranks or Toxic?

What is Cloutlighting?

According to https://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcthree/article/2f85d272-c509-4d2c-86bf-d4ed4f4e6d9b, Cloutlighting is when someone “does something to intentionally upset their partner” that is often seen as a “prank, or a deliberate attempt to pick an argument.” The pranker then films the reaction of their significant other and posts it online for the purpose of social media views and likes.

Problems of Cloutlighting:

  • Can cause trust issues in relationships
  • Can be very abusive
  • Very hurtful to partner
  • Sets an influence for viewers to also try those acts on their partners as well
Seen above is the reaction of a woman who
had been a victim to clout lighting. Her boyfriend had
put chills powder on her tampon and filmed her reaction.
Here is another example of clout lighting where this man had
pranked his girlfriend into thinking her cat had died.
He is seen here filming her reaction when she finds
out her cat has not passed away
